This full-day training provides a comprehensive overview of the codes and technical standards governing the design, installation, monitoring, testing, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm systems. Participants will explore the relationship between the IFC, IBC, IEBC, NFPA 1, and NFPA 72 (2022 Edition), along with relevant NEC and UL standards, and learn how these documents are applied in real-world compliance and inspection settings.
The course covers key system components, documentation, cybersecurity considerations, system types, peripheral connections, and inspection, testing, and maintenance practices, with a high-level overview of plan review. Designed for inspectors and fire prevention professionals, this session strengthens technical knowledge and supports consistent, effective enforcement of fire alarm system requirements.

Todd Iaeger - Lead Auditor Specialist
Todd joined UL in 2016 as an AHJ Education Specialist/Alarm System Auditor upon retiring from public service after serving 26 years in Pennsylvania and North Carolina (seven years as a police officer, eight years as a firefighter/EMT, and eleven years as a fire marshal). Todd has considerable experience in disciplines associated with the built environment, the Fire Service, and Community Risk Reduction, and holds certifications in building and fire code inspection and fire investigation. He has been an Adjunct Instructor at the National Fire Academy and presented training courses nationwide and contributed to publications related to Building and Fire Code Enforcement, Legal Administration of Code, Fire Protection Systems, Code Enforcement Technology, Fire Investigation, Evidence Collection, Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony, Courtroom Testimony and Search Warrants for Code Officials, and Fire Investigations Involving Fire Protection Systems. He represents UL Solutions on NFPA Technical Committees 950, 1031, and 1033. Todd works remotely from the suburban Philadelphia region.
Jody Dwyer - Lead Auditor Specialist
Jody Dwyer is an experienced fire safety professional with a diverse background in fire department operations, fire code enforcement, fire investigations, and fire safety education. After serving for 25 years with the Germantown Fire Department, including 15 years in the Fire Marshal's Office, Jody joined UL Solutions as a Lead Auditor Specialist. His expertise extends to
NFPA 72 technical committee member, and he is a Certified Fire Investigator and ICC Fire Inspector. Jody holds a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University and has also contributed to fire safety education as an Adjunct Instructor and Course Developer for the Fire Science Degree Program at Southwest Tennessee Community College. He is a certified fire instructor and holds a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. In his current role, he provides education and outreach on topics such as fire inspections, fire alarm system plan reviews, fire investigations, code compliance, and Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) to fire departments and related organizations across the country.
